Now all parents go through this when they go out to buy groceries with their children. The child starts crying and whining unless you put in your cart the thing that they are asking for. And what is the kind of stuff that they ask for? Just what they shouldnt be having. You see households across America buying their children stuff like Coco Puffs cereal, candy bars, soda, chocolate covered granola bars, cheese & macaroni and hot dogs. When you are letting your children have things like that to eat, just because they want them, what kind of health and future are you offering them?

I, myself, was raised as such a kid, munching away on potato chips, chocolate bars and hot dogs. I, just like all the other children, also used to bother my mother unless she gave in to whatever I wanted to have. Parents just dont have the patience for that.

When I was 12, I stood 411 and weighed 135 pounds. In simple words, I was badly overweight. I was prescribed a restricted diet by our physician and suddenly I was not allowed to have anything that I could have just yesterday. The restriction was beyond me.

Anyway, I didnt care any more myself and still bought the stuff I wanted to eat stealing money from my parents. But it certainly wasnt the best feeling in the world.

It was way back in the 80s and at that time I was one of the odd obese kids in the neighborhood. Now the oddity has become the norm. One out of every three children in the United States is overweight and their eating habits are not any different to mine when I was a kid. Most of the parents are involved in full time jobs, and they dont have any time or patience to look after the health and diet of their children. As a result, children live fully on junk food and fast food unrestrained and unguided.

We have to change these eating habits if we want to save our children from obesity, which has become a major health issue for children in America. And the responsibility for that falls on the parents. Im sorry to say this but it is primarily the negligence of the parents that let children choose such harmful eating habits. The children only follow and learn everything from their elders, and eating habits are no exceptions.

Lead by example and create a health conscious environment at your home, which allows your child to learn about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Here is how you can start making some family lifestyle changes:

- Teach and explain to your child the difference between health and non-healthy food choices.

- Sit with your child and along with his or her participation, complete a to-buy groceries list.

- Shop along with your child only for the items on this list.

- Encourage your children to adopt healthy eating habits. Involve them in preparing a healthy diet plan for the family.

- While comforting your children against the ridicule of their peers for being overweight, you should also encourage them and support them to overcome obesity, which is a threat to their health.

- Be health conscious, but also trust your child and keep an open policy about food. The kids should be able to express freely when they are hungry without any pressures.

- Dont force your child to clean their plate if they are full.

- Use things like baseball as a reward or incentive, instead of using luring food products like candy.

- Encourage your child to engage in physical activity and sports, and to engage with other kids socially. For this purpose, allow video games or TV for only an hour a day.

- Dont let your children eat in front of the TV. Passive eating has the worst effect on a healthy diet and your children will lose all the sense of when they should stop eating.

As they say: You are what you eat. It is true that your health is largely reflective of the kind of diet you take. There is no such thing as a magic diet in the world, which will offer you a physique as you desire overnight, but the health of your body depends a lot on your food.

Enjoy every bit of it and make your mealtime a pleasant and fun-filled experience. Only just dont overeat and maintain a healthy and balanced diet with the following 10 major food sources for a healthy mind and body.

Whole Grain

Whole Grain cereals are much richer in nutrition than processed flour, as they retain the natural texture, fiber and nutrients like Vitamin B and other minerals which are lost in the refining process. Whole Grain, one of the central parts of a healthy diet, should be taken in a combination in order to make your diet more nutritious, such as, Wheat Kernels and Brown Rice, as they are used as a diet combination in many Asian countries.

Vegetables

Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet. Those who choose to become vegans, dedicate their diet to one of the healthiest food sources on the planet. And there is a good reason for that. Vegetables offer you a wide variety to choose from, incomparable to any other food source. Apart from that, vegetables are pretty much encompassing of all the nutrients required by a human body, with minerals such as Potassium. The most famous single source for Potassium is probably a banana, but did you know that you can take as much as Potassium as that from a single stalk of Broccoli? A fresh salad with one of your favorite herbs and vegetables, with a taste of Feta cheese and vinaigrette is just what you need for the vegetable portion of your healthy balanced diet, with some taste too.

Citrus

Dont we all just love even the feeling that this word stands for. One of the best gifts of nature, citrus fruits are well known to be rich sources of Vitamin C. The rich citrus juices are one of the most delicious ways to stay healthy. But if possible, try to get the citrus fruits you want to use, fresh from where they grow as that would provide their maximum nutritious value with freshness. Having grapefruit for breakfasts and with a little tinge of fresh lime with your salads at lunch, you can perfectly indulge yourself for a citrus treat that you will not be able to give up easily.

Berries

Berries also offer quite a bit of variety, so it does not really matter if you dont like one flavor or two, you still have a lot to choose from to make this highly nutritious food source a part of your diet. All types of Berries are primarily a rich source of Vitamin C, but different types also provide other nutrients. Ripe Blueberries for example are rich in Vitamin K and B6 apart from Vitamin C, and may prove very beneficial to your circulatory system. For some variety, Acai Berries are very good sources of carbohydrates, fiber, proteins and Vitamin A in a single fruit, and are also very effective for weight-loss. Another of the berries which are not so well-known is Wolfberries or Goji Berries, which is an excellent source for Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Zinc and a myriad of other vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

Legumes

Legumes are simple dry fruits, which come in a great variety and are a common part of the diet of populations all over the world and include soybeans, peas, beans and peanuts. These are excellent sources of proteins, iron and fiber for your diet. They are very easily available and a large part of them would actually be a part of your diet already. Legumes like peanuts have a wide use in different food products and are a worldwide favorite.

Salmon

Salmon is one of the most famous fish and its consumption is considered among delicacies. It is found in the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Great Lakes and it is especially in demand as a food source in North America and Japan. Salmon is a good source of the Omega-3 oil, which is very useful for the health of human brain, and Vitamin D, which make it a very healthy and nutritious addition to your diet. It is also very popular and barely anyone can say no to a menu featuring Salmon baked whole with lime.

Nuts

Nuts and Seeds include walnuts, cashew nuts, almonds, pistachios and pecans, among many others. The peanut is an overlap between legumes and nuts. They are found to be high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and are responsible for lowering cholesterol levels, especially almonds and walnuts. For all the vegetarians out there, nuts are the best source non-meat source of Omega-3. It is a part of your diet not to be ignored at all.

Lean Proteins

A healthy diet is a balanced diet, and in order to attain and retain a healthy and active body, you must take care to balance all the components of your diet. The diet of an average American contains much more proteins and fats, than the diet of people from the rest of the world. Try bringing those levels down by cutting your consumption a little on sources which you can clearly identify to be doing so. Moreover, try to replace meat protein sources with non-meat protein sources as much as you can, or in other words, take lean proteins.

Tea

Tea is the favorite beverage of those who hate lumps of fats in their body. Herbal tea is good for your digestive system, blood circulation, cholesterol levels and has a soothing effect, while regular tea keeps you fit and active through out the day. Many people start their day by taking tea. Green tea after lunch and dinner acts a very good cleanser of your digestive tract and helps cutting on fats.

Olive Oil

Olive Oil is the one of the healthiest options in edible oils. It also has a much wider use than other oil types. It can be used in your salad with a mixture of vinegar, as cooking oil, one of its primary uses, and is also used as a popular massage oil. Just take care that the temperature is not too high to let the oil remain intact from excessive cooking.

Nature has bestowed us with many gifts and we certainly have no excuse for not having a healthy body, if we make no use of them. Make those essential changes to your diet straight away, because although these rich food sources can offer all that you need, your eating habits are the main determinants of the health of your body.

Your health is very much in your own hands. It is only a matter of giving your efforts the proper direction to optimize your energy levels and to improve on your health. Here are four easy steps to better health.

1. Take Nutritional Supplements

Along with a balanced diet, it is also important to take nutritional supplements. Although you should try your best to stick to natural food sources, but sometimes food alone cannot meet all the nutrition requirements of the body.

While selecting a nutrition supplement, take care that it is a multi vitamin/mineral supplement. Do not use it at the cost of your diet, but for the relief that any nutrition deficiency in your food will be covered by the multi-nutrient supplement.

2. Have a Healthy & Balanced Diet

A healthy and balanced diet, which covers all your nutrition requirements, is central to your health. Moreover, check your eating habits. Your eating patterns play a great part in the building of your weight, which in turn affects your health.

Choose healthy food sources like fruits, vegetables, nuts, peanut butter, olive oil and whole grain, and avoid relatively unhealthy choices like saturated fats, fried food and hydrogenated oil. Make it a habit to check the labels of food products before you buy them. Follow an organized approach towards setting your eating habits. You will be surprised to see how it works for you.

3. Exercise Regularly

Another one of the universally accepted steps to better health is exercise. But as you start to benefit from physical exercise, make sure that you include it as a regular task in your daily routine. Many people take working out for granted and usually tire out and get bored of it. Only getting yourself organized for exercise can bring you its benefits.

While as far as the benefits of exercise are concerned, no one can deny them. Regular exercise can not only help you control your weight, it keeps your body fit and active and strengthens your bones. Exercise also strengthens and improves the health of your heart, one of the most vital organs in the human body. Not only does it prevent you from the threat of heart diseases, but also optimizes your energy and performance by improving your circulatory system.

4. Stress Management & Sleep

Stress and depression are like poison to your health and no matter if you are taking a healthy diet, stress can still do all its damage to your health. In fact with stress, you will never be able to properly look after your healthy habits in the first place. As a small tip to manage your stress, regularly practice deep breathing exercises. This will help you find a lot of inner peace and will enable you to get over your stress.

There is hardly a need mentioning the importance of a good nights sleep for your health. It is one of the basic physiological needs of your body and without proper sleep, your concentration and performance will be badly affected. Sleep for at least seven hours every night in order to fully restore your energies to the maximum. In order to get better sleep, avoid eating late and start exercising regularly.

As a final piece of advice, try learning new ways to benefit from these four steps to improve your health. Organize yourself to follow them properly, and you will feel better as soon as you make a start.
